You want to make new discoveries, but you have no clue how? Excellent!
How are discoveries made?
New discoveries in Conway's Game of Life can generally be sorted into three types: those found using software/search programs , those found by hand, and those found using a mixture of the two. This document will walk you through some examples of how to make discoveries using the first two methods.
Using software
There exists plenty of free, open-source software for finding patterns - see Catagolue's software page for some examples.
The easiest to use is probably rlifesrc , which can be run from a browser - no installation or compilation needed!
Other examples of easy-to-use software include apgsearch , ikpx2 , and qfind - compilation is fairly simple, and you only need to specify some simple search parameters.
Examples of patterns found using them include:
Time taken for finding oscillators at a specific period
Period 2-4: almost instant
Period 5: on the order of an hour
Period 6: on the order of a day
Period 7: Can take quite a long time, or it might never happen
Period 8+: Good luck. It's not impossible, though, given 180P8 (originally 230P8) and 104P9 exist.
This time may take longer if there are certain restrictions, e.g. the strictly volatile p4 took some time to find.
This applies both to finding things that fit certain criteria (e.g. 62P7 and 754P7 are both useful sparkers found from scratch, and the p7 in Medusa was required for a p28 glider gun) and completions of partials, with p2 and p6 examples immediately below and a p3 example where the p96 B-heptomino hassler on this page is shown.
Some ingenuity may be needed to complete an oscillator. For example, the original form of 754P7 (and proof that it could be completed) was 1320P7, which required realizing that there was a "gutter line" that could be reflected, even though the search program didn't do this. Similarly, 104P9 built on 50P9 and was not entirely from scratch.

The center part of this p18 was found by David Raucci with domino sparks required. He asked anyone available to find a p6 (p3 likely wouldn't work and p9 would take too long) to find a double domino sparker, and wwei23 completed it.(click above to open LifeViewer )
Time taken for finding spaceships of a specific period
TBD (typically longer than oscillators though)
Write your own
You can always write your own software for searching for patterns. Golly supports scripting for both Python and Lua , and the library lifelib can be used with both Python and C++. See Tutorials/Your first Python script and Tutorials/lifelib for information on how to use Python with both of these.
Manually
Looking through old databases
Since 2000, a fumarole phase shift reaction was known for periods of the form 5N+2, but it was forgotten for a long time. In 2021, 83bismuth38 saw it and used it in combination with Merzenich's p31 , which hadn't been discovered yet when the original phase shift reaction was found.

jslife has "wick" and "supported oscillator" sections in addition to complete oscillators. Soon after the traffic stop was discovered, David Raucci looked through the even periods of at least 36 in that database and found that it worked with a wing wick, discovering the first p38.

Completing partials
There are databases of oscillator partials by Jason Summers, David Raucci, and others. Raucci's p38 above is an example. When a new sparker is found, such as 754P7 , 104P9 and p10 domino fountain were in the past, it can complete existing partials. It is also possible to check Catagolue for unusual p15 , p30 , and p46 interactions to complete oscillators with periods that are multiples of those numbers.

When the long boat spin was discovered, it could be created in many ways, where the only requirements were an output blinker and enough clearance. This could be combined with a p29 where a blinker that would normally destroy the oscillator was replaced with the long boat spin, creating a middleweight sparker. This allowed a higher-clearance version of a p29 domino sparker.(click above to open LifeViewer ) Catagolue : here

p96, found by David Raucci on August 26, 2024 . It is a combination of the oscillators in the p45 and p51 sections of this page; the Charity's p16 sparks it twice in different ways.(click above to open LifeViewer ) RLE : here Plaintext : here Catagolue : here
Combining halves
Immediately after David Raucci found the p36 on the left (which is not an example of manual discovery), Matthias Merzenich changed 21+15 to 21+14 to create a p35 based on the p36.

The pi-heptomino hassler below was conceptualized by David Raucci by looking at the shuttles and keeping track of each offset, noting which ones matched. There was a p64 and a p236 with the same offset, so by taking half of each, a p150, equal to (64+236)/2, could be created. Because the factors of 150 are different, different sparkers needed to be used, and Period1GliderGun completed it.

After James Pascua introduced a database of a whole bunch of p4 sparkers, David Raucci tried placing traffic lights , honey farms , pi-heptominoes , and a few other active regions next to some of the more robust sparkers. This one flipped itself, forming a p96.(click above to open LifeViewer ) RLE : here Plaintext : here
