164P8 is a period-8 heavyweight sparker with high clearance. The original form, 230P8, was found by Arie Paap on January 17, 2019.[1] Another variant, which is a double form, was found by Bullet51 the same day; this was the main variant until November 13, 2021.[2] In December 2020, Dongook Lee reduced the bounding box by four columns, at the cost of a higher population.[3] On November 13, 2021, Dongook Lee reduced the population from 230 to 182 and the width from 49 to 35;[4] Entity Valkyrie then made a minor 2-cell reduction two minutes later,[5] to 180 cells. On April 14, 2025, Period1GliderGun found a stable catalyst that recovers in 5 iterations to serve as the backend, reducing it to 164 cells.[6]
