The Devore cellular automaton (specifically the "Devore variation of the Codd self-replicating structure") is a modification of Edgar F. Codd's 1968 8-state self-replicating cellular automaton developed by J. Devore and R. Hightower devised in 1973, having a much smaller replicator with 94,794 cells, compared to Codd's 283,126,588-cell model. A simulation showing the final steps of construction in Devore's design was demonstrated at the third Artificial Life conference in 1992, and full self-replication was simulated later in the 2000s using Golly.
