Codd's cellular automaton is a cellular automaton devised by Edgar F. Codd as a state count reduction of the original Von Neumann Cellular Automaton in the year 1968, a year before Conway's Game of Life. The rule has 8 states and runs on the von Neumann neighbourhood. A self-replicating machine has been constructed in this rule.
