Banks-IV is an isotropic 4-state cellular automaton operating on the von Neumann neighbourhood which is known to be construction and computationally universal for any pattern that does not contain a tub configuration. It was devised by Edwin Roger Banks in January 1971 in his PhD thesis for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but he did not explicitly implement a self-reproducing machine. The self-replicating machine in Banks IV cellular automaton is estimated to be quite massive, requiring O(f³ * w) time complexity and having somewhere around 100,000,000,000 cells.
