A sparkling spring is any period-2 oscillator in which every cell that dies does so of underpopulation. Such oscillators are generally made up of small interacting sparks, an example being lei, which is comprised of banana sparks, domino sparks and dot sparks, as well as disturbed blinkers.
A large number of sparkling springs are small oscillators which go largely unnamed and appear in soups only very rarely.
