Lei[1] is a very small period-2 oscillator. It first appeared naturally on March 24, 2015, in a soup submitted to Catagolue by Michael Simkin.[2]
This oscillator remained unnamed for a remarkable amount of time given its small size, and was previously known by a systematic name of 12P2.

Information on this oscillator's commonness with respect to other naturally-occurring patterns is currently unknown.
Glider synthesis
All strict still lifes with a population of 23 or fewer cells, all oscillators with 16 or fewer cells, and all spaceships with 35 or fewer cells are known to be glider-constructible. A glider synthesis of this object can be found in the infobox to the right.
Usage
Lei can be used to create thin but non-extensible stabilisations of squaredance and lone dot agar.
