Unsynthesizable oscillator 1
(Redirected from Unsynthesizable oscillator)
Unsynthesizable oscillator 1 is an oscillator that is provably impossible to synthesize. It is the first such oscillator where the proof of impossibility does not involve the still life patch in the solution for unique father problem.
The first example was constructed on April 27, 2022 by Oscar Cunningham based on a "self-forcing" finite patch of period-2 agar found by Ilkka Törmä and Ville Salo.[1] A reduced form by Aleph is shown in the infobox.[2]
On February 27, 2026, Katrina discovered a smaller example with a 733-cell self-forcing patch, whose smallest stabilisation has a minimal population of 696.[3]
On October 10, 2026, 400spartans produced a 321-cell period-2 oscillator with a 275-cell self-forcing patch.[4]
A population-696 unconstructible p2, with a self-forcing patch of 733 specified cells.
