A period-57 glider gun is any glider gun with period 57. The first such gun, Quetzal-57, was discovered by Matthias Merzenich on April 15, 2016.[1] Since then, a variety of reductions have yielded much smaller period-57 guns, most of which, including the smallest known example shown in the infobox, have been constructed to incorporate a period-57 R-pentomino hassler found by David Raucci in 2021.[2][3][4]
On February 5th, 2025, Merzenich found a gun variant using only a single engine based on a partial by Elijah Ken.[5] Further reductions to the period-3 sparkers by iNoMed[6], vilc[7], and Merzenich[8] reduced the bounding box of 50 × 46. In March 2025, Merzenich found an alternate period-3 catalysis that reduced the bounding box to 47 × 40.[9][10]
