Paperclip (or drain trap[1] or S[2]) is a 14-bit still life.
It contains a photonegative Z-hexomino.
Occurrence
- See also: List of common still lifes
Paperclip is the sixteenth most common still life in both Achim Flammenkamp's census and Catagolue's census, being less common than aircraft carrier but more common than long ship in both.[3]. Among all still lifes with 14 cells, it is the second most common, being less common than half-bakery but more common than big S.[4] It is also the twenty-second most common object overall on Catagolue.
Because it usually forms from specific predecessors, the difference in frequency in asymmetric soups compared to C2_2 (the symmetry the object has) is small, although not negligible.
Use in oscillators
Two paperclips can form an extensible period-2 oscillator (Paperclip at paperclip p2).

There is also a p32 Lumps of muck hassler and a p77 Honey farm hassler that forms a temporary paperclip in the middle.
Glider synthesis
All strict still lifes with a population of 23 or fewer cells, all oscillators with 16 or fewer cells, and all spaceships with 35 or fewer cells are known to be glider-constructible. A glider synthesis of this object can be found in the infobox to the right.
In other rules
In rules that support the object but not its predecessors, such as HighLife, it is much less common.
