Brew is a multistate rule created by 83bismuth38 in 2018.[1]

Description
The rule is defined as a rule table with four cellstates:
- 0: background
- 1: red cell
- 2: green cell
- 3: blue cell
Each non-background cell state follows a modification of Conway's Game of Life, with the following tweaks:
- Red cells "ignore" green and blue cells, and green cells "ignore" blue cells. "Ignored" cellstates are not counted as alive neighbours, and do not prevent birth of an "ignoring" cellstate.
- A red cell becomes green instead of dying; a green cell becomes blue instead of dying.
- However, a dying red cell with three blue neighbours becomes a blue, rather than green. A consequence is that blue cells can affect green cells.[4][5]
There are variants of the rule, where blue cells cannot affect green cells (see section "Variants").
Patterns
Constellations of green blinkers can support blue reactions with periods 6, 10, 12, 14, 18, 22, 48. A red jam becomes p6, and red Silver's p5 becomes p40. A green pentadecathlon becomes a p60 oscillator due to a period-multiplying reaction made of blue cells; a red pentadecathlon eventually settles into a period-150 oscillator (and surrounding low-period ash).[2] A red pentadecathlon can also support reactions with periods 225 and 270.[6]
There are multiple glider variants with a green or red glider. Other spaceships from Life tend to become puffers.
Variants
Several rules were proposed as variations of Brew:
- Brew2: a dying red cell becomes green.[5]
- Brew5s: a 5-state rule table.[7]
- Brew6s: a 6-state rule table.[8]
- LeapBrew: a variant based on LeapLife rather than Conway's Game of Life.[9]
