A motif is a commonality among multiple objects (generally still lifes or the stator parts of oscillators) that suggests that there is a common method of synthesizing those objects[1].

The following example shows still lifes with a curl motif:

Tapeworm
(snake with curl)

Fourteener
(eater tail siamese curl)

Scorpion
(curl tie bun)

Inflected clips

Clips

Curl component
