Curl is a 7-cell component of many still lifes, particularly larger natural ones. It is more common than other components its size. Notably, paperclip and big S consist solely of two of them, which is part of the reason they are the second and third most common 14-cell still lifes.
Sometimes, during glider synthesis, a single glider can turn another motif into a curl; one-glider components are rare. However, this is often a downgrade to a simpler form even if it increases the cell count, as curls are common.
By itself, a curl evolves into a bun and eventually a honey farm.
