Hugh Thompson was a Life pioneer who compiled the Life Codex, the first edition of which which he completed in 1972. In 1971, he discovered a number of notable patterns, including cap, shillelagh (with Charles Corderman), tub with tail, thunderbird, interchange, and a 4c/5 blinker fuse, most likely an outcome of developing the codex.

Thompson's codex is a compendium of more than 23,000 images of then known patterns, including their life histories (successive generations), as described in detail in Lifeline Volume 8.
