The ecologist is a c/2 orthogonal period-20 spaceship that was described in Lifeline Volume 3.[1] It consists of the classic puffer 2 with another lightweight spaceship added to suppress the debris by turning it into a ghost Herschel.

Variants

The central puffer engine requires dot sparks in order to continue moving, and the debris behind requires another one for perturbation. The standard ecologist uses sparks from three lightweight spaceships, however the same spark can be provided by the upper, more distant spark of a middleweight spaceship instead.

If the front spaceship which the trailing spaceship follows is a middleweight spaceship, the trailing spaceship must also be a middleweight spaceship; a lightweight spaceship in this position would interact destructively with the front escort.

Explicit syntheses for higher and more complicated variants were provided on 31 May 2024.[2]
