Eater 4 is a 40-cell still life catalyst allegedly found by David Buckingham.[1]
Despite its name being in a series of eaters, this still life cannot eat gliders in regular Life. As it is diagonally symmetric, it can only perturb symmetric reactions; the four northeast-most center cells regrow in a few generations after being destroyed by taking a bite out of something.
Examples of its use include the pre-pulsar hassler in p29 pentadecathlon hassler, the p30 honey farm hassler shown below, the L122 Herschel conduit, and a p9 LOM hassler.

On January 7, 2020, Jeremy Tan found a 14-glider synthesis of this still life.[2] On November 4, 2022, GUYTU6J reduced the cost to 12 gliders and also found syntheses for other variants.[3]
