Chucklebait is a 23-cell still life mainly known for being a honey farm catalyst.[1][2][3] Its uses can be seen on the honey farm hasslers and honey farm shuttles pages. Known periods using the chucklebait reaction include 24, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 43, 45, 50, 51, 55, 60, and 64-and-up[note 1] for oscillators,[4] and 34, 46, 52, 59, 60, 61, 72, 74, and 143 for guns that can be capped to form oscillators.[note 2]

The name "chucklebait" was first suggested by user confocaloid, as the first part of its apgcode is "4aklb88". Despite the name, it is not a bait object, as it is never destroyed when used as a catalyst.[note 3]

Glider synthesis

As of October 2024, the cheapest known synthesis costs 11 gliders.[6] A 11-glider synthesis was found in June 2023.[7][8][9] A 18-glider synthesis was found in March 2023.[10][11] The previous synthesis required 24 gliders and used an incremental synthesis, not a soup-based synthesis.[12] However, it has appeared in asymmetric soups extremely rarely, making it natural.

A variant of the chucklebait catalyst can be constructed with 9 gliders;[13] a 9G synthesis was found in November 2022.[14]

Notes

  1. Periods 64 and up can be achieved by Snark64 loops, and oscillators of periods 70, 80, 83, and 102 which don't rely on Snark64 are also known.
  2. Guns with chucklebaits can be constructed for all periods 61+ using the p61 glider splitter.
  3. In 2026, a large highway robber was constructed by Entity Valkyrie that uses a minimum population chucklebait as a bait object, merely to show that a chucklebait can, in fact, be used as a bait object under certain circumstances.[5]
