HighPottery (its thread simply referring to it as Pottery) is a higher-range outer-totalistic cellular automaton of range 2, devised by TheWayOfTheCon in 2026. The rule has some life-like behavior, but patterns are less spread out than in Life.
Subpages
Behavior
As said before, HighPottery is rather life-like in nature. Soups and other unstable patterns quickly spread out in a chaotic nature, lasting hundreds or uncommonly thousands of generations before settling down into stable objects. There are many relatively small patterns that can have significant chaotic evolution.
Common sequences and sparks
Several common sequences have been identified.
Additionally, there are a couple of known common sparks.
Tridecamino
The tridecamino is a fairly common sequence that is active for 164 generations, stabilizing into two still lifes and a c/3d. Its commonness and spaceship-releasing nature have made it of interest for catalysis, analogous to Life's Herschel.

472-tick diehard
Another common sequence is a diehard that lasts 472 generations.

Still lifes
The most common still life in HighPottery is a 3x3 version of the block. Because of the extended neighborhood and S4 condition, all pentaplets with a bounding box of 3x3 are still lifes in the rule. Additional still lifes include hollow 4x4 and 4x3 rectangles, the latter of which is prevalent in catalysis technology.
Pottery
There is a broad and diverse class of still lifes in this rule called "pottery", which is it's namesake. They are large, geometrical still lives that are entirely hollow, the only live cells being part of a one-cell-thick border. They are almost always symmetric and form from small predecessors.
Oscillators
Several common oscillators exist in HighPottery, however most of them have little use due to their low period of 2.
Rarer, higher-period oscillators exist though, and they are the backbone of some technologies.
Spaceships
Elementary
(To make things simple, c in this context will be equal to one cell each generation, as it does in the most-studied neighborhood, range-1 Moore, contrary to the two cells each generation that a range-2 neighborhood allows the speed of light to be)
There are five elementary spaceships; that is, they all have occured in the Catagolue C1 census. The two most common by far are a c/3 diagonal and c/6 orthogonal.
Less common are a c/4 diagonal, a c/2 orthogonal, and 6c/24 orthogonal. Guns have been constructed for each elementary spaceship but the 6c/24o.
c/3 diagonal
The c/3 diagonal spaceship is the most common, slightly more so than the c/6 orthogonal. It appears from the common tridecamino. The first gun constructed was for this spaceship.
c/6 orthogonal
6c/24 orthogonal
The 6c/24 orthogonal is the largest and least common of the five elementary spaceships. It creates strong sparks on its backend, and is in fact the only known spaceship so far that creates sparks. It has been used to make the first puffers.

Infinite growth
No natural or semi-natural infinite growth patterns have appeared in HighPottery as of October 2026. All currently-known infinite growth patterns have either been engineered or were found by search programs.
Guns in HighPottery have been constructed, utilizing the large sparks of the period-160 and period-100 oscillators. Currently, no gun utilizing the period-50 is known.
The first known gun was assembled by TheWayOfTheCon and fires c/3d's. It uses four copies of the period-160 oscillator. Later c/6d and c/2o guns, using synthesis and reflection technology, were made by yyh_baboon.

Methuselae
No dedicated search for methuselae in HighPottery has been conducted yet.
