Nightingale is a rule taking place in a nonstandard neighbourhood, comprised of a union of the moves of the wazir and knight, or equivalently the rhino.

In this neighbourhood, cells are born with three neighbours and survive with 3 or 4, so it is denoted by the higher-range outer-totalistic code R2,C0,S3-4,B3,N@555AAA (as supported by Golly), since 01010_10101_01_10_10101_010102 = 555AAA16.
If a chequerboard colouring is applied to the infinite plane's cell lattice, each cell is affected only by the state of itself and its twelve closest cells of opposite colour. If this colouring extends to the cubic lattice, alternating through time as well as space, a pattern constrained to one colour is unable to affect empty space of the opposite colour. However, a cell on a black cube in generation t with four live white-cube neighbours will lie on a white cube in generation t+1, alive iff it was alive when it was black. In this way, a quartet of cells on one colour act as a recepticle for communication with the other. Many simple low-period patterns are comprised of cells of a single colour (that as such may be overlaid with copies of themselves of opposite phase), but others involve cells of both colours, inextricably intertwined.
A ruletable is available. If placed into one's apgsearch folder and used with its filename in place of a rulestring, it will submit hauls to the Catagolue census.
Still lifes and oscillators
All period-2 phoenices may have both their phases overlaid to form a still life, since no cells alive in one phase could have four neighbours in the other (as they must have three to be born).
Spaceships of known speeds; c, 2c/3, 5c/9, c/2 and (1,1)c/2 (click above to open LifeViewer)
The existence of patterns exhibiting infinite growth is unknown. An odd-period spaceship besides a p1 photon is known, the true-period 5c/9; while the only known odd-period oscillator (excluding still-lives) is the prime period p37.
