MVS, or Murderers VS Sheriffs, is a custom rule in which murderer cells kill sheriffs and civilians whilst sheriffs defend civilians and kill murderers.

Contributors

There are a few major contributors to this rule, including:

  • Derbil0 - creator of the ruletable itself, also found multiple patterns, including a replicator-based oscillator which was used to create a gun
  • TheWayOfTheCon - helped kickstart searching the rule; submitted a few hauls to Catagolue
  • EvinZL - created the first gun: a period-288 gun that fires a period-36 spaceship
  • FWKnightship - submitted many hauls to Catagolue, created a lower period and more compact gun

States

There are 4 states; 1 dead state alongside 3 live states; each state has its own behavior. For specific behavior, check the ruletable shown on the forums. Here are the basic behaviors of each:

  • Civilian (white) - Civilians are born from dead cells with 3-5 exclusively civilian neighbors. They survive with 2-4 innocent (that is, civilian or sheriff) neighbors, but atleast 2 must be civilian. A civilian can be "promoted" to a sheriff if there are 4-6 civilian neighbors and no sheriff neighbors. However, a civilian with 6 innocent neighbors, of which atleast 3 are civilians, and no murderer neighbors, will become a murderer. A civilian with 3-5 neighbors, of which 3 must be sheriff, will also become a murderer.
  • Sheriff (blue) - Sheriffs, by themselves, emulate B35/S23. A lonely sheriff (disregarding civilians) dies in a tied duel with one murderer neighbor. Two sheriffs kill any murderers. A sheriff can be born from a dead cell with 1-2 civilian and 1-2 sheriff neighbors.
  • Murderer (red) - Murderers, by themselves, emulate B35/S34. One murderer or more will kill any civilian neighbor that is not protected by a sheriff. Two murderers (basically) kill any civilian or sheriff. A murderer that has less than 3 murderer neighbors dies regardless of the other states around it.
