Talk:Tutorials/Glider syntheses

There was some wording added last year that I can't quite figure out:

Firstly, the 5-glider collision in the left of the synthesis creates a constellation of a long boat tie ship and a nearby boat. It may be initially thought that we must edgeshoot the boat after the long-boat-tie-ship is created, but we don’t need to do so. In the formation of this still life, it opens up an opportunity of a boat-bit reaction, where one glider collides with a pattern so that it is turned into a boat as a snake catalyst.

This all makes perfect sense if the still life being created is in fact a long-boat-tie-ship with a nearby boat -- but it's not! There is in fact a 5-glider collision on the left side of the synthesis in question, and a glider coming in on the right does result in a boat being created to stabilize the induction coil -- but it's nothing like a boat-bit reaction, and there's no long boat tie ship in evidence. It looks like that whole paragraph is talking about the synthesis of xs18_wggca52zgbq1z01.

That's an 18-bit still life... but before this paragraph was added, the tutorial was talking about synthesizing xs18_g8ge1e8628cz01, a completely different 18-bit still life with no boat-bit anywhere. Where did the verbiage about "long boat tie ship and a nearby boat" come from, then?

-- I guess it doesn't matter at this point. I'm going to try moving the above paragraph to a separate section that talks briefly about boat-bits and fast components. If I'm somehow missing some huge detail and the above paragraph actually made sense where it was, let me know what I'm missing and I'll repair any damage. Dvgrn (talk) 11:26, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
