Here are some interesting quotes from Dietrich Leithner's earliest messages to the LifeCA mailing list. These messages mainly talked about pseudo-p14 gun construction, but they also somewhat accidentally gave a good picture in passing of some of the common limitations of Lifenthusiasts' personal computer technology toward the end of the last millennium:
4 Aug 1996:
I plan to program RLE input and output routines into my Life program. During August I will be on vacation, but intend to visit my office (currently my only Internet connection) once a week to water my plants. So, if everything works out as planned, I should be able to send the p14 gun as well as my earlier p15 guns in RLE format to the Life list as early as Friday, August, 9.
9 Aug 1996:
Last Sunday I planned to construct an improved version of my pseudoperiod 14 glider gun and send it to the Life list as early as today. Well, I finished the new p14 gun, but could not complete the coding for the new RLE export routine in time.
16 Aug 1996:
I constructed this p14 gun on 7 Aug 1996, improving on my first p14 gun of 26 Nov 1994 and on another attempt done in 1995. Despite being my smallest p14 gun yet, it is still quite large: Due to its size of 695 x 689, you may not be able to import it into your preferred Life program. (Ironically, I cannot load it into mine, because my program is restricted to a maximum size of 320 x 160).
22 Aug 1996:
I just found out that the RLE data of the p14 glider gun is to large for my e-mail program. So, I haven broken it in two parts and send them separately as Part 2A and Part 2B.
