Talk:Field
Is this what "field" typically means?
I haven't seen "field" used this way at all. To me, the "field" is the universe of cells. As dvgrn used in an example sentence, "ten live cells on an otherwise empty field". I prefer deletion over disambiguation though.
There's a possible third use, although it's something that hasn't been explored yet. HyperRogue has something called a "field quotient", which in the game, is a bounded grid with wraparound in hyperbolic space. HyperRogue has a cellular automata feature. Wikipedia doesn't have anything with that name, but it does have "quotient field", but I can't tell whether it's the same thing or not. (HyperRogue also has the "zebra quotient", which is very clearly named after something in-game rather than in the real world, at least if you've played the standard game mode, which is why I'm not sure "field quotient" isn't also made up.) That said, while this paragraph is longer than the first one in this message, it's also much more minor. HotdogPi (talk) 14:13, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- The "field" is used (more-or-less) this way in this discussion (i.e. "Which field?"), hence I made a redirect.
The redirect is not quite precise -- because "technology" is defined as a set of Life reactions that are "naturally" viewed together and often explored as a set, while "field" may refer to other practices/activities like welding or using a certain software tool. So "field" seems to be wider than "technology".
There are also fields in mathematics. Confocal (talk) 14:24, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
