Talk:33P3.1
I have the same objection here as in Talk:28P7.3. None of the illustrated reactions are anything specific to 33P3.1, except the fourth, and how is anyone supposed to understand the purpose for the fourth pattern? As they stand, these patterns all seem to me to be far more confusing than helpful.
A link in the text to eater 1 and/or beehive with tail would be plenty to point out these uses of 33P3.1. Really I don't see the point of even mentioning the beehive-with-tail equivalence... but I wouldn't object to a simple link the way I do to this kind of over-use of animated embedded viewers.
It's similar to the idea of adding a reference to "flyswatter" in the Wikipedia entry for "violin". Sure, you can use a violin as a flyswatter, or as a paperweight, or as a storage container for dried peas -- but that's not what a violin is for -- and the Wikipedia entry for "violin" is seriously damaged, not improved, if you clutter it up by mentioning any of these other uses.
I'd definitely like to remove the first three of these patterns, so that they don't end up in the main-namespace pattern collection. I hope other LifeWiki folks will chime in and disagree, if there's any disagreement.
33P3.1 has a perfectly legitimate use, which is shown beautifully in the fourth animation. But the text doesn't explain that use: replacing the eater 1 with a 33P3.1 in a p3 bumper will allow it to fit in occasional tight spots where the tail of the eater 1 would get in the way... or more often, will allow it to fit in a slightly smaller bounding box, as part of the Pointless Optimization Game. - I don't recognise the use of a beehive with tail and eater to consume that p3 spaceship, so it might be worth including on the page for the former. The p3 eater is my own discovery, and the post you quoted is where it was first published. In the original posting of the p3 bumper you can see the additional 6 rows it occupies beyond the standard fish-hook eater [1]. When I posted the version of the bumper containing the p3 eater, I did so primarily concerned about optimisation of bounding box of guns using the bumper. It didn't occur to me that using a periodic eater to shave off a row normally occupied by the eater tail was such a novel idea. As chris_c commented later on in the gun thread, it seems wrong to be preferring such complicated patterns with higher population, but them's the rules (paraphrasing)
