A steampunk (also known as vintage or retro) construction, in the context of cellular automata, is a pattern that intentionally avoids using certain modern technology. The term was coined by Dave Greene in 2017 to refer to Herschel circuitry that did not use the syringe, despite the fact that it was already known and would have resulted in a much smaller construction.[1] The term has also been used to refer to patterns that would primarily be useful in a steampunk context.[2]
Examples of steampunk constructions include the self-constructing Remini and QuickSilver Demonoid.
