Pond is an 8-cell still life discovered by the JHC group in 1970.[1] It is the smallest lake, followed by the 24-cell lake 2.

It can be seen as containing a photonegative block.

Occurrence

See also: List of common still lifes, Most common objects on Catagolue

Pond is the seventh most common still life on Adam P. Goucher's Catagolue, being less common than tub but more common than long boat. Among all still lifes with 8 cells, it is the absolute most common, followed by mango.[2] It is also the ninth most common object overall on Catagolue.

The pond was the sixth most common still life in Achim Flammenkamp's census, being slightly less common than tub and more common than ship.[3] Refer to the ship page for why it ended up being less common than the tub.

Compared to Catagolue's typical 16 × 16 soups, the pond is 19% more common in 8 × 8 soups and 7% more common in 10 × 10 soups.

Many ponds originate from a common tetraplet predecessor called the prepond.

Pre-pond appears in jaydot, a small methuselah.

Glider synthesis

Main article: Glider synthesis

There are two 2-glider collisions, one head-on and another perpendicular, that produce a clean pond. A pond can also be made by colliding a glider into a blinker.

As a catalyst

A pond recovers when hit in a specific diagonally symmetric way. This can be seen in the period-3 biting off more than they can chew and the higher-period examples below.

In other rules

The prepond turns into a pond in 32 Life-like rules, from B3/S23 to B378/S23678, but it dies out in some rules including HighLife and Grounded Life (B35/S23). Consequently, the pond occurs less commonly in these rules.
