p3 pipsquirter is a period-3 pipsquirter oscillator.
The discovery history of p3 pipsquirters is relatively complicated. Although runny nose is technically the first example, it is not particularly useful as it has virtually no clearance.[1] A better example, and the first that could actually be used to support another oscillator, was found by James Pascua with WinLifeSearch on March 18, 2021, but not announced until August 13. Even then, it did not receive much attention at the time as it was buried in the middle of a pattern collection posted in an obscure sandbox thread.[2] On October 21, 2021, 83bismuth38 independently discovered a similarly high-clearance p3 pipsquirter with JavaLifeSearch, which was reduced by cvojan and subsequently posted to the forums in an 88-cell form.[1] This version was then progressively reduced to 73 cells by Dongook Lee,[3][4] Mark Niemiec,[5] and Jiahao Yu.[6] iNoMed posted a much smaller version, with only 33 cells, the next day.[7][8]
Pipsquirter sparks in general are less versatile at p3 than at other periods, as they do not fully recede in the next generation. In many cases, a caterer can do the job just as well while being far smaller.[9] However, p3 pipsquirters can still be used to support the p12 carnival shuttle.[4] Although the clearance of the 33-cell version is slightly worse, it can also be used for this purpose.[8]
