HoneyLife is a Life-like cellular automaton in which a cell survives from one generation to the next if it has 2, 3 or 8 neighbours, and is born if it has 3 or 8 neighbours. It was named because honeycombs occur frequently in this rule;[1] like EightLife, a line-of-six spark evolves into a honeycomb due to the survive transition S8 (but the birth condition B8 is unrelated).
Patterns
Many patterns from regular Life, Pedestrian Life, and EightLife are compatible with this rule. Four high-period oscillators that don't work in Life, EightLife, or Pedestrian Life are shown below:

There also exists a proof for the existence of oscillators which query both B8 and S8 for all periods 61+, as well as B8 and S8 querying oscillators for periods 21, 42, 43, 52, 58, and 59. [2]
Guns
There are a few unique guns, including the unique AK-94 evolution in this rule, a p168 based on an oscillator of the same period [3], and several multi-barreled guns based on a Herschel-related turning reaction. [4]

On the last gun, it was known no later than 2020 [5] that Herschel makes a half-turn in 215 ticks in this rule and can be stabilized into a p430 oscillator. This oscillator can be uncapped [4] and different stabilizations can be turned into either four-barreled or six-barreled guns.

Spaceships
The smallest known c/6 diagonal spaceship is the stag beetle, which is in common with Life and was found in a Life-specific search by May13.[6]
Linear growth
A pair of B-heptominoes stabilised by lightweight spaceships, that acts as a period-180 dirty puffer in Life, is a period-40 block pair puffer in HoneyLife.

Universality
The Turing-completeness of HoneyLife was mentioned in an article published in Journal for General Philosophy of Science;[7] the article failed to list the necessary patterns and reactions inherited from Conway's Game of Life for creating any kind of pattern that proves universality. The same applies to Pedestrian Life and EightLife.
On November 21, 2017, Peter Naszvadi constructed a Rule 110 unit cell in HoneyLife, proving the rule Turing-complete.[8] The pattern is based on eater 1, middleweight spaceship, twin bees shuttle and p46 gliderless MWSS gun, therefore it also applies to Pedestrian Life and EightLife.
There is also an earlier proof sketch of HoneyLife's universality,[9] which contains a proof-scheme covering all rules in the outer-totalistic rulespace between B3/S23 and B3678/S23678.

On March 12, 2024, the b38s238/C1 census on Catagolue reached a total of one trillion objects, making HoneyLife one of several Life-like rules with hauls subject to statistical verification and peer review before being committed.
The b38s238/C1 census on Catagolue accumulated over 131 billion objects by June 2017,[c 1] over 171 billion objects by October 2017,[c 2] over 190 billion objects by October 2021,[c 3] over 255 billion objects by March 2023.[c 4]. The C1 census reached a total of 300 billion objects on March 16, 2023,[c 5] and a total of 500 billion objects on April 30, 2023.
