Monogram (or initials[1] or JHC[2]) is a period-4 oscillator that was found by Dean Hickerson on August 11, 1989.[3] In terms of its minimum population of 18 cells, it is tied with two variants of mold on table as the third smallest possible period-4 oscillator, although it is not known if this is a complete list.[4] It produces some weak sparks which can be utilized in e.g. the stabilization of the carnival shuttle.
It first appeared semi-naturally in September 2014 in a soup found by Josh Ball using apgsearch.[5] It later appeared in an asymmetric soup on May 5, 2015.[6]
Ivan Fomichev found a 12-glider synthesis for a monogram based on an asymmetric soup on October 18, 2015.[7] This was reduced to 8 gliders by GUYTU6J using another soup on May 22, 2021,[8][9] and then to 7 gliders by MathAndCode on July 28, 2021.[10][11] On February 7, 2024, a 6-glider synthesis was found by Carson Cheng.[12][13]
