Michael (Mike) Beeler was a member of the MIT group in the 1970s, and his work with Roger Banks, Steve Ward, and Rich Schroeppel led to the proof that a rectangle of only 9 × 33 cells contains a Garden of Eden and the discovery of the first Garden of Eden.[1]

Beeler's interest in Life led him to explore other nascent cellular automata, particularly Paterson's Worms, which Conway developed in 1971 with Mike Paterson.[2][3]
