Middleweight volcano is a period-5 oscillator that was found by Dean Hickerson on April 6, 1992[1] that produces sparks much like a middleweight spaceship. Like the toaster, its sparker rotor is stabilized by another, separate rotor encased within the oscillator. In particular, one of their shared bushing cells has no other stator neighbors, and must rely only on the two rotors for its continued survival.

Synthesis
On July 7, 2021, MathAndCode and Aleph found the final step of a synthesis.[2] Three days later, Extrementhusiast completed it using a different final step, creating an 88-glider synthesis.[3] A reduction to 81 gliders was found in July 2023.[4][5] On June 18, 2025, KtT lowered the cost to 80 gliders.[6][7]
