Currently known issues with how LifeViewer reads pattern data.

  • Margolus patterns are often positioned unexpectedly on bounded grids.
    • In the following example, every cell is positioned such that they coincide with the bottom row and right column of the edge.
    • The cells can be seen to exist when using Select All and when viewing the alive cell count.
    • When using the "Neighbour" shader, inverting the contents of the bounded grid, stepping forward and then pressing undo will show different coloration on the bottom and right boundaries compared to the top and left.

  • Triangular patterns loaded on bounded grids may result in cell deletion.
    • For either of the following two patterns, drawing a cell at the very top left of the bounded grid, using Save Pattern and then reloading the pattern will result in everything being shifted down and to the right.

  • When saving a Margolus pattern using Save Pattern at an odd generation, reopening that pattern will cause it to have completely different behaviour than the original pattern.
    • This could be fixed by including an extra cell of empty space on the appropriate axes before the pattern iff saved on an odd generation to compensate for the shifting grid subdivisions.

  • -0 is handled inconsistently as a bounded grid size: it is accepted by Torus and Klein Bottle, but rejected by Plane, Cross-surface and Sphere.

  • Patterns with 3 or more states are openable in the range-1 2-state algorithm, but are rejected as invalid by the general-range 2-state algorithm.

  • Invalid bounded grid sizes used with PCA patterns will cause cells to display a blank state name when moused over.
    • The Generations algorithm exhibits the correct behaviour and displays a name for the state.

  • Saving patterns with non-canonical bounded grid definitions will not convert these to canonical if the rule in use is a rule table.[1]
    • This was claimed to have been fixed in build 1294, but still occurs.
