Hersrch is a C++ program developed by Karel Suhajda that searches for open or closed Herschel tracks in Conway's Game of Life using a database of known static and periodic track components. It played a large role in the initial completion in 2003[1][2] of Jason Summers' extension of Dieter and Peter's glider gun collection to cover all periods from 14 through 1000.[3]
Hersrch continues to be used occasionally, and its conduit database is periodically enhanced.[4] However, many of the circuit connections that would once have needed a Hersrch search can now be connected much more conveniently with no search program needed at all, using for example some combination of syringes, Snarks and Bandersnatches -- none of which had been discovered yet when Hersrch was in common use.
