To hammer a LWSS, MWSS or HWSS is to smash reactions into the rear end of it in order to transform it into a different type of spaceship. A hammer is the object or reaction used to do the hammering.
In the following example by Dieter Leithner, a LWSS is hammered by two more LWSS to make it into a MWSS:

Hammering can be done with period-30 devices.[1]
It is possible to hammer xWSSes using sacrificial still lives, making it possible to construct stable hammers. For example, a stable HWSS to MWSS converter uses a hammering reaction between an HWSS and a constellation of a loaf and block which converts it into an MWSS.[2] A stable MWSS to HWSS hammer also exists which uses the same concept with a different constellation.[3]
