Engine

An engine is the active portion of an object (usually a puffer, gun or oscillator) which is considered to actually produce its output, and which generally permits no variation in how it works. The other parts of the object are just there to support the engine. For example, the switch engine is the active component of the block-laying switch engine, glider-producing switch engine and Corderships. Other notable examples of engines include the Coe engine and Schick engine, both of which can be perturbed to form puffer trains of various periods.
