Cha cha[1] is a period 2 muttering moat[2] oscillator, the long extension of clock. It has similar catalytic capacities to the clock.
Natural Occurrence
In a somewhat unique edge case, on July 11, 2022 Charity Engine found a symmetric soup (in the symmetry C2_2) that produces this oscillator in an asymmetric manner, and the two halves of the soup do not interact throughout the evolution of the soup. As a result, by using the same seed for a C1 soup, an asymmetric soup producing cha cha can be made. However, since an asymmetric SHA-256 preimage is known for an occurrence of this oscillator (as described above), the oscillator is considered as being natural.[3]
Glider synthesis
A 23-glider synthesis was found by Martin Grant in early December 2013.[4] In April 2019, a 12-glider synthesis was found by Goldtiger997.[5] On May 11, 2025, Mitchell Riley ran a haul using a modified version of QuFince that found multiple distinct dirty 8-glider syntheses, that could be cleaned up into a 10-glider synthesis.[6]
