Butterfly is a common evolutionary sequence evolving into the formation of two beehives seen below after 33 generations. Compare this with teardrop, where the beehives are five cells closer together.

The butterfly can be hassled by oscillators; a period-15 example is buddleia.

Butterflies are extremely common in diagonal symmetry, even more than the teardrop; this is because the teardrop has a cell along the axis of symmetry, and once a diagonally symmetric pattern loses all cells along that line, no more can be born there, allowing butterflies but not teardrops.
