A binary counter or binary register is a circuitry component which stores the number of times a particular event (e.g. the arrival of a glider) has occurred. These often perform other functions as well.[1][2]

Example

A 3288 × 3195 binary register that was constructed by Dave Greene in April 2020 is shown below. It uses several glider duplicators and edge-shooting Herschel conduits to create one of four different slow glider salvos, corresponding to the functions INC, TDEC, SET, and READ. In the NW portion of the pattern, a sliding block keeps track of the location of the read head and a diagonal line of boats represent stored binary bits.[3]
