An engine is the active part of an object, particularly a puffer. For example, the switch engine is the active component of the block-laying switch engine, glider-producing switch engine and Corderships. Other notable examples of engines include the Coe ship and Schick ship, both of which can be perturbed to form puffer trains of various periods.
