Trans-snake on bookend or down snake on bookend[1] is a 13-bit still life which involves a snake stabilising a bookend.

This specific isomer is named trans due to having a larger bounding box, as the two "ends" of each island effectively point away from each other. Since the snake is a stable pattern by itself, the term on is used rather than and.

As a catalyst

A single bookend is sometimes used as a catalyst.[citation needed] As the bookend alone is not stable, it has to be stabilised, and a snake on bookend is the smallest way to do so. Whether this isomer is useful in that aspect is unknown.
