A fake or counterfeit glider is a spaceship in a cellular automaton, other than Conway's Game of Life, that matches Life's glider in at least one of its phases but evolves differently. Whereas the glider has period 4 and moves diagonally at c/4, fake gliders can have different periods and move in different directions at different speeds.
Examples
The c/12 diagonal spaceship with the apgcode xq12_153 in the non-totalistic rule B2e3-j4arw5n/S23-a is a fake glider:

The c/2 orthogonal spaceship in the rule B3-nqr4acew5y6/S1e2-a34wz is a fake glider:

Likewise, there is a photon in the rule B2a3a4r/S3j that looks like a glider.

The glider in B3ai45/S1e3 goes the opposite direction a glider should.
