32P21 is a small period-21 oscillator found by Charity Engine on February 11, 2022 via symmetric soup search.[1] It uses a block and a tub on each side as catalysts. It is the smallest known period-21 oscillator by population, superseding caterer on 28P7.3.
Various LCM oscillators can be made from it, including the smallest known oscillators of periods 168,[2] 189,[3] 231,[2] and 462.[4]. It can also phase shift a p5 to create the smallest known oscillator of period 63. The Grins that it produces can be used to convert a beehive to a block, similarly to Coe's p8.
Mark Niemiec found a 20-glider synthesis of this oscillator on the day of its discovery.[5] This was reduced to 19 gliders by cvojan, and then to 18 by an unknown user.[6] The next day, cvojan found a 14-glider synthesis.[7] Carson Cheng then further reduced it to a 12-glider synthesis.[8]
About 1 in 2×1011 soups in the correct symmetry (C2_4) form a 32P21 in the center.
