51P384 is a period-384 oscillator discovered by Mitchell Riley on April 1, 2023.[1][2] As the oscillator was discovered on April Fools' Day, Mitchell Riley pretended it was a p64 partial that needed to have the external blinkers removed. After it was "completed" as a p64, the fool was revealed that it was complete to begin with.

A 17-glider synthesis of the oscillator was found by Carson Cheng on the same day.[3][4]

On April 3, 2023, Anivec discovered that the p64 version of the oscillator can act as a filter, doubling the period of a glider stream divisible by 32 but not 64.[5]

On December 5, 2023, Period1GliderGun discovered that replacing the eater bridge snakes with figure eights results in a 49-cell form, which is the smallest known period-384 oscillator:[6]

The oscillator is a period-64 blinker factory that stabilizes by itself at period 384. Thus, many variants of the period-64 engine are possible by tampering with the junk that the engine produces, of which some are SKOPs (smallest known oscillators of period).

Guns

Many of the smallest 4-digit period glider guns make use of a specific reaction where an almost-formed block gets sparked by a dot. The base period is 192, LCMed with the sparker period. An example is shown below with meatball, multiplying the period by 7 for an overall period of 1344. Every time the block forms in the wrong generation for the glider to be formed, the block fully forms, and then the sparker cleanly deletes the block. The almost-formed block can also be created by a variant form of the smallest p80 R-pentomino hassler (see many of the 80n guns in Catagolue, starting from gun_560), a p166 R-pentomino hassler (see gun_2158), and some herschel conduits, but 51P384 is the smallest of the oscillators that can produce this block.
