Discovered by David Buckingham
Year of discovery 1983

p26 pre-pulsar shuttle is a period-26 pre-pulsar shuttle oscillator discovered by David Buckingham on January 18, 1983, and was the first period-26 oscillator to be found.[1] Its original 208-cell form is composed of four 14-generation pre-pulsar shuttle mechanisms using beehives as well as a central 12-generation pre-pulsar shuttle mechanism composed of four beacons. A 200-cell version that replaces the beehives with blinkers was found by Noam Elkies on April 22, 1997.[2] On November 17, 2016, Maia Karpovich found a smaller 14-generation pre-pulsar shuttle mechanism, resulting in a 144-cell variant of this oscillator.[3]

The 200-cell variant was the smallest known period-26 oscillator (in terms of minimum population) until the discovery of the p26 dependent reflector loop in February 2012. The smallest known period-26 oscillator is currently the p26 honey farm hassler, which has 60 cells.

The p26 pre-pulsar shuttle first occurred semi-naturally on April 17, 2024 by Charity Engine.[4]

Glider synthesis

On July 8, 2023, Chris857 found a 280-glider synthesis of the 144-cell form of the oscillator.[5][6] Over the next few days, he and Carson Cheng reduced the synthesis cost multiple times, down to 234 gliders.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] On September 6, 2023, Chris857 lowered the synthesis cost to 226 gliders.[14][15] On March 24, 2025, KtT lowered the cost to 210 gliders.[16][17]

On October 27, 2024, Chris857 found a 490-glider synthesis of the original beehive-supported version of this oscillator.[18][19] He reduced the cost to 318 gliders later that day with a different catalyst synthesis found by KtT,[18][20] and further reduced it to 228 gliders the next day.[18][21] On March 24, 2025, KtT lowered the cost to 196 gliders.[16][17] On June 9, 2025, KtT further lowered the cost to 183 gliders.[22][23] On June 13, 2025, Chris857 brought the cost down to 162 gliders.[24][25]

On March 27, 2025, Chris857 found a 228-glider synthesis of the 200-cell blinker-supported version of the shuttle.[26][27] On June 9, 2025, KtT lowered the cost to 215 gliders.[22][23] On June 13, 2025, Chris857 brought the cost down to 194 gliders.[24][25]
