Paul Rendell constructed the Turing machine, the first Life universal computer, a pattern capable of Turing-complete computation., in 2000. In 2010, he extended it into a universal Turing machine. He further extended that into a fully universal Turing machine the following year. The fully universal Turing machine was voted Pattern of the Year for 2011 (tied with the Lobster).

He is the author of Turing Machine Universality of the Game of Life, published in 2015.
