"Most of these patterns were found by Conway himself or his MIT group" --- Indeed! Project MAC, 545 Technology Square, had a PDP-6, a visual display, and a group of mostly undergraduate students who absorbed night time hours (see Levy's Hackers). At that time Conway was still in England.
