Fallback is a property of strong sparkers that means the region with the spark dies quickly.[1] Stronger sparks have greater fallback. Unlike clearance, while fallback can be good or poor, it cannot be quantitatively measured. Two examples of high-period sparkers with high fallback are 104P9 and the domino spark in Merzenich's p31.

Merzenich's p31 rephasing a fumarole to form 66P62 – this appears to be a p155 oscillator, but it is not. This perturbation is only possible because of Merzenich's p31 having an extremely high fallback.
