45-degree MWSS-to-G (or 45-degree LWSS-to-G) is a small converter completed by Ivan Fomichev on October 14, 2015.[1] It accepts either an MWSS or LWSS as input and produces an output glider traveling at a 45-degree angle relative to the input direction.
This converter is based on a reaction found by Dongook Lee in July of the same year, in which an LWSS hitting a beehive triggers a honey farm reaction, releasing a glider, then being perturbed by three eater 1s to restore the beehive via an intermediate lumps of muck. However, an extra B-heptomino emerges afterwards, threatening one of the eaters. The best Dongook Lee could find was that an eater placement leaves a stray long boat,[2] and so early attempts focused on designing staged recovery systems to remove that long boat with another glider.[3] Eventually, Ivan Fomichev discovered a combination of eater 2 and a boat on very long house catalyst to complete the device with a repeat time of 58 ticks.
