A mashup rule is any rule which uses multiple states to emulate multiple different rules in one universe, or to emulate alternating rules without using any alternation. Mashup rules are notably distinct from alternating rules, because in a mashup rule the different states can coexist in a single universe, whereas in an alternating rule all live cells on a given step follow the same phase of the rule. Since Golly cannot natively simulate alternating rules without the use of emulation, mashup ruletables are the only way to simulate alternating rules that are not emulated by any B0 rules.
