New puzzle/defense game for web/android (and iOS soon!)

Post by NeilST »

Hello, I'm new to the forums, but I wanted to share Colonize, my new game (and research project) based on Conway's Game of Life. I created the game as part of one of my academic research projects (unrelated to CA: this game focuses on how people learn new skills in the context of a causal video game).

On Android, you can find Colonize at:
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... s.Colonize
Barnes and Noble Nook: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/coloniz ... 0043910974

And, a web version is available on my website: http://behaviorgames.com/colonize/play-colonize

Colonize is currently under review at the Apple and Amazon app stores, and I'm hopeful it will be released in late November or early December.

Colonize is a puzzle/defense game in which players create colonies of "cells" that evolve according to Conway's Game of Life rules (and several related CA rules). Players learn to create classic patterns in Life and to defend their colonies from "toxic" cells. The game uses a 50x50 toroidal grid, and includes five types of "cells": each governed by a different rule (Conway, Seeds, Day & Night, 2x2 and Move). Players are guided through the basics of Conway's GoL and other rules in a set of Training levels. Then, players move on to a two-player version of life (based on Mark Levene and George Roussos’ paper, A Two-Player Game of Life (http://arxiv.org/pdf/cond-mat/0207679.pdf) in a set of defense levels, and in a 2-player online multiplayer mode.

The game also includes a sandbox, and the option to share games/sandbox creations online. And, once you have started a game, you can sync your game and continue on other devices/platforms (web and mobile).

Colonize is free, though players can upgrade to a "premium" version of the game (and proceeds go toward supporting the research project). If you would like to try the premium version, please use one of these free upgrade codes (which you can enter at the in-game upgrade screen): r83325, r91521, r21429, r92203, r66912, r18779, r35065, r59219, r96175, r96840, r24186, r97353, r96145, r53684, r82025, r22770, r47959, r92416, r81298

I would be especially happy to get feedback from the ConwayLife community on the game, and thank you for your time,

Also, if anyone would like to try out the beta version of Colonize for iPads/iPhones, you can sign up as a beta tester for the game on TestFlight: http://tflig.ht/TCHGpH
